Frequently asked questions
Although travelling by train is not the fastest way to go to Hue from Danang airport, it is cheaper and safer than other modes of transportation. The train journey may take approximately 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on the schedule and the cabin that you opt for. The best thing about this train route is that you can marvel at one of the most magnificent bays in the world - Lang Co Bay.
Decent beachside hotels/resorts, such as Hyatt Regency, InterContinental, Premier Village, Fumara, are far from the city centre. In contrast, riverside hotels are located right in the heart of the city. Beachside hotels/resorts tend to be more luxurious and of higher quality. So, they’re also more expensive. If you travel for business purposes, riverside hotels are a better choice. By contrast, beach resorts would be perfect for leisure trips.
Since Da Nang welcomes a large number of international tourists on an annual basis, many of its residents can speak English well enough to help them communicate with tourists. So, if you only speak English, you won’t find it difficult to get around the city unless you go to little villages in the suburbs. However, it may interest the locals to know that foreign tourists can use some frequently used phrases like “cảm ơn” (thank you) and “xin chào” (hello).
The best activity after 5 pm is to head towards Linh Ung Pagoda (Son Tra Peninsula). From this location, you can witness the sun gradually go down below the horizon. After that, you can go for a walk along Han River, which is one of the most favoured activities for both locals and tourists in Da Nang after the sun goes down. There are quite many activities going on along the river banks in the evening, including vendors selling different souvenirs as well as food.
Traditional markets, such as Con Market, Han Market, Dong Da Market, are the best places to find cheap clothes, souvenirs, and food. Here, you can find loads of goods at bargain prices. You can also consider big shopping malls like Vincom Plaza Ngo Quyen, Big C Da Nang and Lotte Mart Danang. However, goods on offer in these malls may be slightly more expensive than those in traditional wet markets in exchange for their higher quality.
Some relics of the former military airbase south of Danang city on the way to Hoi An may be seen, meanwhile remains of French and American bunkers may be seen on Hai Van Pass. Along the journey to Hai Van, you'll also pass through Red Beach, where the first American marine ground forces landed outside Danang. Other more important sites, like the Demilitarized Zone, are located in Quang Tri, which is nearly 200km from Danang.
The beach road leading up to Son Tra mountain is in good condition and is relatively safe. It's a lovely broad boulevard that, unlike some of the city's busier roadways, is quite simple to ride on. However, make sure your motorbike has a powerful engine and sufficient petroleum to avoid running into trouble in the middle of a mountain. Also, visitors are suggested to ride up Son Tra mountain during the daytime and get back to the city before it gets dark for the sake of their safety.
It is always better to take a proactive approach to your trip by booking as many things in advance as possible. By doing this, you can rest assured that everything is already in place by the time you travel and maximise the amount of time you have for sightseeing. Moreover, you may find some good deals by booking tickets in advance. The standard cable car tickets are VND 750,000 (USD 35) apiece.
The authorised exchangers with the best rate are Eximbank and ACB. Their rates are pretty competitive compared to state-owned Big4 banks, including Vietcombank, BIDV, Vietinbank and Agribank. By contrast, the exchange rates at the airport are the least competitive. There are also authorised exchangers in shopping malls and hotels.
Danang is seafood heaven. However, not many people know where to eat seafood as they flock to tourist traps most of the time. You might be surprised to learn that Danang locals don’t eat seafood in large restaurants along the beach, which mainly cater to tourists; they instead choose smaller eateries that serve seafood. You can stroll along Nguyen Tat Thanh and Vo Nguyen Giap streets in the evening and end up at an eatery you find suitable.
