Frequently asked questions
Phu Quoc beaches are pretty much similar to other beaches in Nha Trang and Con Dao. They’re crystal clear and are becoming cleaner than ever, following the government’s strict prohibition on partying ashore. The only difference is that beaches in Phu Quoc are shallower than those in Nha Trang, which has the deepest beaches in Vietnam. As a result, swimming in Phu Quoc is safer than in Nha Trang to some extent.
There are various nice beachfront resorts that are in close proximity to the town, with InterContinental Phu Quoc Long Beach Resort being the only luxury one. The remainders are premium resorts, including Sol by Melia Phu Quoc, Novotel Phu Quoc Resort, Andochine Resort & Spa Phu Quoc. These resorts are only around 15 minutes from Duong Dong - the centre of Phu Quoc.
The Ho Chi Minh - Phu Quoc route is regarded as a golden route in the airline industry and is serviced by four carriers: Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, Vietjet Air, and Vietravel Airlines. Vietnam Airlines, the national carrier and a Skyteam member, provides the most satisfactory service of the four. If you're lucky, you might be able to fly on one of their newest planes, like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
There are several beaches safe for children in Phu Quoc. You may consider Sao Beach and Khem Beach, both of which are located on the Southern tip of the island. There are no waves on these two beaches from May to October, making them highly safe for swimming and snorkelling activities. Moreover, it may interest your children to know that Bai Sao bristles with starfishes during this part of the year.
Phu Quoc has lots of decent bars, indeed. More decent bars can be found in the fancy resorts scattered around the island, with the most well-known being INK 360 of InterContinental. This sky bar gives you magnificent sunset ocean views. Some noteworthy bars in town are Chuon Chuon Bistro and Bar, Rory’s Beach Bar, Bittersweet - Hidden Cocktail Bar, and OCSEN Beach Bar & Club. Besides classic and signature cocktails, you may also fall in love with their superb food!
You should take Sao Beach and Khem Beach into consideration. These two beaches are less crowded than Bai Truong (Long Beach). Bai Sao is famous for having lots of starfishes, while the adjacent Bai Khem is pretty calm as it has very small waves all year round. A unique thing about these two beaches is that they’re shallow, making them safe for swimming.
Many watersports are now available at Sao Beach. They are not suitable for those on a tight budget, however. Flyboarding comes at VND 1.200.000 (USD 60) per person, compared to VND 700.000 (USD 35) for parasailing. Jetskiing is also available, at VND 200.000 per person. Please keep in mind that all prices are subject to change.
For a few dollars an hour, you may hire snorkelling equipment in front of Amigos Restaurant on Long Beach and snorkel around the rocks barely 100 meters away. Other options include a variety of snorkelling and diving boat tours to both ends of the west coast provided by a dozen different travel agents. The weather and the areas they take you to will determine the quality of what you see on the day.
The area around La Veranda Hotel has a few decent bars and restaurants but isn’t packed with tourists. There are also some good hotels and guesthouses around the area in case you don’t wish to stay in a resort. The bonus point is that the beach is pretty clean, especially from December to May.
Assuming that you set off from Ho Chi Minh city, the first destination you should stop by is Ben Tre, the most popular destination in Mekong Delta. You’ll get to see lots of coconut trees as you kayak along the tiny canals. Tra Vinh or Soc Trang can be your next destination. Here, you can learn about the life of Khmer locals and visit their temples. Subsequently, you should head to Chau Doc (An Giang) before procedding to Rach Gia pier in Kien Giang to travel to Phu Quoc island.
